A walking festival that’s set to run for a second year with new themed and quirky walks…

This October, Hay-on-Wye welcomes its second annual walking festival, having recently been extended to cover five days following the popularity of last year's event. Taking place between the 11th and the 15th of October, the organisers have put together a hugely varied programme of some 50-guided walks catering for all members of the family. With tickets having just gone on sale, now is the time to book yourself onto your walk of choice.

Whether you're after a full day of exploration or a couple of hours of relaxed strolling, and whether you're looking to brush up on your map-reading skills, learn a little about local history or simply take in the views, you're unlikely to find a better event anywhere else in the country.

All of the walks are graded according to difficulty and are also led by experienced walkers and walk leaders, many of whom run their own activity centres in the area, so you can be sure that you're being given the best insight possible into your chosen speciality - be it geology, foraging or photography. A number of walks start in Hay-on-Wye itself, with those walks further away providing transport at a small additional cost.

On Friday 12th October, the beginner's foraging walk is the perfect opportunity to get to grips with the best items to look for, as well as where to look, how to look and how to pick safely. The walk will concentrate mainly on fungi, but will also touch on other types of foraging. Or, if you're a fan of photography, book yourself onto the festival's photography-based walk on Saturday 13th October. This is an excellent opportunity to learn all about landscape photography, together with the freedom to explore some of the most interesting sites around Hay-on-Wye. Be sure to bring your own walking boots and digital camera.

And even if you find yourself all walked out, you can enjoy the programme of evening events, which includes a festival ceilidh, and a festival quiz - both of which have been brought back due to popular demand. There's also an evening of Brecon Beacons song courtesy of the “Village Quire” at the famous culture venue, the Globe, and a screening of the film Resistance, upon which two of the festival's walks will be based.

You can book tickets for all walks and events online now at www.haywalking.org, while tickets will also become available at several local outlets closer to the date of the festival.

Hay Walking Festival is being supported by the Offa’s Country Partnership and Walking with Offa project to help the Festival. This partnership project has received funding through the Rural Development Plan for Wales 2007-2013, which is supported by the Welsh Government and the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development, and match funded by Brecon Beacons National Park Authority.
