Walking the paths around Offham Chalk pits, near Lewes

Many people walk the paths around the old chalk pits at Offham, near Lewes .

But almost none of these paths is on the rights of way map so, in theory, any one of them could be stopped up at any time. 

So, although there is no immediate threat, the Ramblers Association is setting out to add the paths to the rights of way map by collecting evidence that they have been used by the public for the past 20 years. (since 1998)  If you have walked on some or all of these paths please…

Have you tried to use the bridleway past Lewes racecourse buildings since June and found most of it fenced off?  Or are you concerned to read that it has been fenced off? The route with the problems …

Have you tried to use the bridleway past Lewes racecourse buildings since June and found most of it fenced off?  Or are you concerned to read that it has been fenced off?

The route with the problems is just north of the racecourse buildings, on the route that runs between Mount Harry at one end and Lewes Town Centre or Lewes Prison at the other.  It used to be very wide, up to 11 metres across.  If you were going to or from the prison direction you just kept straight…

Stanmer Park wheelchair access route trashed

Some years ago Brighton Council opened up a five mile wheelchair and pram accessible trail on the South Downs at Stanmer.  It won a lot of praise.

Free night or two at Telscombe Youth Hostel

The RA and the YHA have launched a joint project as part of the Ramblers Routes project.  The deal is that someone who has completed the Ramblers routes training creates two walks from a youth hostel.  They get a free bed night.  Then the routes are checked by another member, who also gets a free bed night.
