In his brilliant and entertaining book "Philosophy for Life and Other Dangerous Situations", Jules Evans explores modern philosophical communities built around millennia-old ideas: Epicurean communes, Stoic gatherings, Sceptic summer camps, Cynic occupations, even a Platonic sect whose members include the actor Hugh Jackman.
He warns against trying to fit an entire society into one philosophy of the good life, arguing instead that Socrates and his descendants didn’t come up with one definition of the good life, but several.
This is practical, every-day, usable philosophy at its best - join us for for a fun and thought provoking evening.
Jules is policy director at the Centre for the History of Emotions at Queen Mary, University of London, and writes for the Centre’s blog. At the Centre, he runs an AHRC-funded project researching and promoting the rise of philosophy groups worldwide, via www.thephilosophyhub.com, which is launching in autumn 2012. He also helps to run the London Philosophy Club, which is the biggest philosophy club in the UK.
